Vive XR Elite is the Flow remastered to deliver an immersive XR experience with a convertible dual-system architecture. Users can switch from All-in-Two (AIT) to All-in-One (AIO) mode utilizing the battery cradle attachment for activities requiring active moment and ergonomic support, adding up to two hours of battery life. The challenge was downsizing the XR Elite from its predecessor, Flow, while integrating a patented dual-spring hinge, four tracking cameras, RGB passthrough, and structured light. By overcoming optical constraints and thermal demands, we achieved a refined, compact design that preserved the dual-lens aesthetic and met our battery life goals.

The design process began with testing various battery-on-temple configurations, revealing challenges with achieving a secure grip while avoiding excessive bulk. Our exploration included placing batteries on each side of the temples, but the trade-offs in balance and comfort proved too great compared to a conventional battery cradle at the back. Ultimately, we developed a convertible solution that balanced compactness, a lightweight design, and an extra 2 hours of battery life while ensuring a secure and comfortable fit.

The temples were positioned externally to house key engine components, keeping the front profile compact. This design also enhanced the dual-hinge system, allowing for a rear-temple structure that can be swapped with a full cradle, ensuring a secure, comfortable fit for various head sizes.

My role involved working closely with the Industrial Designers, the Taipei design team, and the engineering team throughout the development process, providing creative direction and project management. The primary responsibility was ensuring the design was successfully translated into production while maintaining its original concept. This involved generating design concepts, including early explorations of temple design inspired by ME architecture proposals. I advocated for design decisions, questioned assumptions, and offered alternative viewpoints to engineers to ensure the design stayed true to core principles of human-centered design. This collaborative effort led to critical improvements during production, resulting in a refined final product
