Project Proton explores a miniaturized VR architecture that prioritizes lightweight design, excellent ergonomics, and easy donning/doffing. By focusing on user-friendly features and drawing inspiration from eyewear, the goal was to create the most accessible and inviting VR devices, making the transition into VR seamless and approachable for newcomers. The process began by exploring different architectures, ultimately selecting a dual-hinge design over a halo style for its familiar, glasses-like form factor and compact footprint. A design language was developed with two front-facing stereoscopic cameras and a stylish, expressive look inspired by mirrored sunglasses, emphasizing comfort and ergonomics through rigorous testing.

The project resulted in two distinct VR devices: the All-in-One (AIO) and the All-in-Two (AIT). Both are lightweight and user-friendly, with the AIT especially suited for VR newcomers. Each device features a fabric covering that conceals the engine while providing a soft, comfortable touchpoint.

All-in-Two (AIT)

The AIT is a compact, portable VR viewer with a striking dual-lens aviator design. It uses Bluetooth earbuds to save space and cater to user preferences. The AIT offers a streamlined, flexible VR experience powered by a connected smartphone or PC.

All-in-One (AIO)

The AIO is designed for extended VR use, featuring a sleek visor with a signature center split. It includes a rear cradle for better weight distribution, a powerful battery for longer sessions, and detachable off-ear audio for added comfort, delivering a fully integrated and immersive VR experience.

As Associate Creative Director, I led architecture explorations and concept development, shaping the design pitch to convey our value proposition. For the AIO, I creatively integrated a dual-lens design with an enterprise focus, introducing the unique split facial and overhang concept. I worked closely with our CMF designer to craft a compelling narrative and ensured our vision was reflected in the final cosmetic mock-up and key visualizations. Project Proton highlighted our design integrity, proving VIVE's ability to be bold while staying true to the brand. The concepts debuted at MWC 2020, inspiring the Flow and XRE, launched in 2021 and 2022.
